Kindergarten (ages 4-6)
Curriculum is inquiry-based with plenty of room for unstructured play and a focus on life skills building.
Our youngest students spend a maximum of 75 minutes a day in academic lessons starting with an introduction to form drawing number/letter recognition and phonics in addition to math. The rest of the time experiencing the physical, social, emotional and mental benefits of time spent outdoors.
Our holistic math approach focuses not only on counting, comparing, sequencing and recognition but on developing a foundational understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts through exploration and play. The intention is to engage children’s senses and curiosity while helping them to see math as a relevant part of their world. Hands-on learning nurtures problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
-
Grade 1 (ages 6-7)
Curriculum is inquiry-based with plenty of room for unstructured and outdoor play with a focus on reading and writing, form drawing an introducing cursive in addition to math.
Our holistic math approach focuses on developing a well-rounded understanding of mathematical concepts by emphasizing the connection between numbers, shapes and every day experiences.
It is made more tangible by exploring math in real-world contexts using hands-on activities rather than just isolating addition and subtraction skills.
-
Grade 2 to 3 (ages 7-9)
Curriculum is arts-integrated, revolving around the fundamental pillars of reading, writing and arithmetic.
Literacy development is based on fostering their comprehension skills and cursive writing abilities in addition to their grammatical and spelling proficiencies.
Our holistic math approach is designed to support students across two grade levels, allowing them to explore and understand different concepts in a way that is interconnected and appropriate for their developmental stage. It focuses on geometry, multiplication and division as well as deepening mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills for real-world applications like using money.
Through games, cooperative work or individual exploration, both grade levels can be challenged at their individual levels. It supports the mastery of foundational concepts through engaging, student-centered activities.
-
Grade 4 to 5 (ages 9-11)
Curriculum is inquiry-based and follows a project-style framework. Our holistic math approach goes beyond memorizing formulas. It builds on foundational concepts and takes students into more complicated problem-solving by strengthening their appreciation of mathematics as an interconnected system that we can explore creatively but use practically in real-world applications – including more open-ended scenarios like budgeting.
Students continue to solidify their comprehension of basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) while beginning to talk about remainders, fractions, decimals as well as geometry angles, symmetry, area and perimeter. Their workbooks allow them to reflect on what they have learned and they are encouraged to see mistakes as part of the learning process.
Older students mentor younger students in an integrated way. This peer collaboration encourages students to articulate their thinking clearly.
In Language Arts, students experience how reading, writing, listening and speaking work together to communicate more effectively. They are introduced to various literary genres including poems and biographies. Novel studies emphasize character development and talk about author’s purpose, fostering an understanding of diverse perspectives.
Creative writing remains a cornerstone, encouraging exploration of different forms (narrative, descriptive, informational) while developing skills in grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.
Starseeds values the process as much as the outcome. Nothing supports open-ended learning better than being in nature. All children have access to a minimum of 1.5-2 hours of free-play each day. We support child development when we allow space for safe levels of risk within play.
Our holistic, alternative education school is a dynamic and growing community and is designed to meet the evolving needs of our students. As we expand, we are continually adapting our program to support children across various ages and grades. By adding new grade ranges over time, we provide a seamless educational journey where a strong connection to peers and teachers is built, fostering not only academic excellence but emotional, social and spiritual growth as well.
